Here are six things to consider when booking and picking locations for your senior photoshoot here in the Metro Detroit area:
1. Photogs Reflecting Your Personality & Interests:
Nature Lovers 🌿: Parks, flower fields, wooded trails, or lakeshores are great for a soft, organic feel.
City Vibes 🏙️: Urban backdrops like downtown streets, colorful murals, brick alleys, or coffee shops can create a modern, edgy look.
Rustic & Vintage 🚜: Barns, old bridges, or abandoned buildings (if safe) can add character.
Hobbies & Passions 🎭: If your senior is into sports, dance, music, or books, consider places like a stadium, a theater stage, a music studio, or a cozy bookstore.
School Pride 🎓: Your high school campus, football field, or a college you are planning to attend can add sentimental value.
2. Seasonal Considerations:
Spring 🌸: Blooming flowers, bright green fields, or botanical gardens offer soft and fresh vibes.
Summer ☀️: Golden-hour beach sessions, wildflower fields, or urban rooftops work beautifully.
Fall 🍂: Tree-lined streets with colorful leaves, pumpkin patches, or apple orchards add a cozy, nostalgic feel.
Winter ❄️: Snowy forests, twinkling lights downtown, or an indoor studio for warmth and a polished look.
3. Metro Detroit Outdoor Favorites:
I love finding outdoor photography spots in the spring, summer, and fall all around Metro Detroit. Some of my favorite locations include Kensington Metro Park in Milford, Independence Oaks in Clarkston, Stoney Creek Metro Park in Shelby Township, Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor and Maybury State Park in Northville! These spots offer a variety of scenic backgrounds like woodsy trails, open fields, and waterfront views—perfect for capturing natural and timeless senior portraits.
4. Lighting & Time of Day Considerations When Booking your Senior Photography Session:
Golden Hour (Sunrise or Sunset): My favorite time to capture senior pictures with the soft, dreamy lighting that flatters skin tones!
Overcast Days: Great for even lighting without harsh shadows.
Midday (Avoid Harsh Sun): If unavoidable, look for shaded areas to prevent squinting or going indoors like a coffee shop or studio space.
5. Accessibility & Comfort:
Some locations require a bit of walking—comfortable shoes may be needed between shots.
Certain public places may require permits, so check ahead of time.
If bringing outfit changes, ensure there’s a nearby spot to switch comfortably.
6. Mixing It Up:
If unsure, choose a location with variety (like a downtown area with both brick walls and greenery nearby).
Consider multiple locations if they’re close to one another—this can give more diversity in the final gallery.
Choosing the right location for your senior photoshoot is all about showcasing your personality, embracing the season, and picking a spot where you feel comfortable and confident. Whether you love the natural beauty of Kensington Metro Park, Independence Oaks, Stoney Creek, Matthaei Botanical Gardens or Maybury State Park, or prefer a more urban setting with city vibes in downtown Detroit, your location should reflect your style and values. Think about the best lighting, plan for easy outfit changes, and consider mixing locations for variety. With a little preparation, your session will feel effortless, and you’ll walk away with stunning portraits that truly capture this exciting milestone in your life!
