Newborn Photography Style Guide

Newborn Photography Style Guide!

Here's a guide to help you plan what to wear for your newborn photography session:

I recommend choosing soft and flowy neutral tones for a timeless and cohesive look. The goal is for you to feel comfortable and authentically yourself—whether that’s a cozy cream sweater with leggings or jeans, or a flowy dress worn barefoot at home.

I especially love creams, beiges, soft blush tones, and muted earthy colors like sage green, warm browns, tans, and chambray blue. They all photograph well. Think light, airy, and understated rather than bold or dark. This styling approach works beautifully for your partner and your other children as well—soft neutral sweaters, cotton button-downs, or henley-style tops photograph so nicely and keep the focus on connection.

I recommend avoiding bright or neon colors, as they can create unwanted color casts on the skin, as well as very dark tones (like deep navy or black), which tend to add heavier shadows—especially indoors—and don’t align with my light and true to life editing style for newborn sessions.

Once you’ve chosen your outfits, be sure everything is steamed and wrinkle-free for the most polished look.

What to Wear: Newborn Session Checklist 🤍

✔️ Stick to soft, neutral tones- Creams, beiges, soft blush, and muted earthy colors (sage green, browns, tans, chambray blue)

✔️ Keep it light & airy- Choose lighter, muted shades rather than bold or dark colors

✔️ Dress for comfort- Think cozy + natural—sweaters with leggings/jeans or a flowy dress barefoot at home

✔️ Coordinate the whole family- Soft neutral sweaters, solid color dresses (texture is great though) button-down shirts, or henley tops work beautifully for partners.

✔️ Avoid bright or neon colors- These can create unwanted color casts on the skin in photos

✔️ Skip very dark tones- Deep navy, black, and other dark colors can create heavy shadows indoors

✔️ Choose simple, timeless pieces- Minimal patterns and textures photograph best

✔️ Steam your outfits- Wrinkle-free clothing makes a big difference in your final images

✔️ Ask for help if needed- Send me outfit options anytime—I love helping style your session!

I hope this newborn photography style guide and checklist helped you plan for your session. If you’d like a second opinion, I’m always happy to help! Feel free to send me photos of what you’re considering—I truly love helping style sessions and bringing your vision together.

All the best,
