In-Home Newborn Photography in Metro Detroit- Prep Guide!
Here is a guide and checklist to help you prepare for your in-home newborn photography session:
First, I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for choosing me to capture these beginning moments with your new little one! There is truly nothing more special than those first few days with your newborn. It’s a season filled with so much love, wonder, and tiny little details you never want to forget—and I’m so incredibly honored you’ve chosen me to capture it all. Being trusted with something this meaningful is not something I take lightly, and I’m so grateful to help preserve these memories for your family.
Newborn sessions are some of my absolute favorite moments to capture. They’re slow, tender, and centered around your baby and this fleeting chapter you’re in. My goal is always to make the experience feel as smooth, relaxed, and enjoyable as possible—so here’s a little guide (and checklist!) to help you prepare:
After you book your newborn session, I’ll reach out to start planning the details with you. We’ll talk through your preferred color palette for swaddles and outfits, along with any props you’d love me to bring. This is also the perfect time to gather inspiration—whether that’s from Pinterest or photos you’ve come across that you love. While I can’t guarantee recreating every image, I always do my best to incorporate your vision in a way that feels natural and true to your session. In addition, please share any prop requests (visit this link) you would like me to bring along for posed newborn sessions).
If you are having pictures taken as a family as well, this is also a good time to finish planning what you are going to wear. See this blog post for help on what to wear- Newborn Photography Style Guide
The Night Before (or Morning of)- A few small steps in preparation can make a big difference in photos:
Give baby a bath and apply lotion (helps with dry/peeling skin)
Check and gently trim baby’s nails if needed
Set aside a clean diaper and simple outfit (onesie or swaddle)
For my breastfeeding mamas- here’s a little tip I’ve learned along the way: caffeine in the day or two before your session can sometimes affect how sleepy or settled baby is. Every baby is different, of course, but if you’re hoping for those extra snuggly, sleepy moments, it might be worth skipping coffee the night before and morning of—just in case.
